Russell Davis
Russell produced his very first instrument in 1973 while he was a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. It was made under the guidance of Maurice Bouette, who later became the principal of the Newark School of Violin Making.
To date, Russell has made 26 cellos and a similar number of violins and violas. A professional cellist himself, several of his cellos are played by professionals and this accounts for the bulk of his output.
The cellos are of two models: a full sized Strad and a smaller modified version of a Rogeri. First instruments were made in London then in Mid Wales. For the last 20 or so years Hereford is found on the labels, the town where he now resides.
Working on his own Russell has never sought to exhibit or enter competitions, leaving his instruments to speak for themselves and using his contacts as a player and teacher to sell his output.
