FOCUS: PAUL MICHAEL STANTON
Summer 2011
Our current contemporary maker focus is on Paul Michael Stanton and his latest cello, which is based on the 'Davidov' Stradivari of 1712.
An experienced cellist and maker, Paul graduated from Newark School of Violin Making in 1995 and after gaining valuable experience working in some of the leading violin shops in the UK, he set up his own workshop in 2000.
Since then Paul has become well known for his stylish interpretations of late period Guarneri del Gesu violins and is well represented in music colleges throughout the World.
As a cellist and English maker Paul has a particular interest in the 19th century school of English cello making and has closely studied the work of William Forster, its most important exponent.

In addition to his interest in English cellos, Paul returns time and again to the classical elegance of the Stradivari form.
His latest full-sized 'Davidov' cello featured here, is constructed from Swiss spruce and Balkan maple and has a rich amber red varnish over a strong golden ground.
It possesses a powerful and penetrating tone and is even throughout its range.
It is available from Strings for £10,000

We also have a less expensive, full-sized cello in stock made by Paul in 2000, retailing at £6000. Click here for more details. (Sorry folks, this has now been sold.)
And there is currently one of Paul's Amati pattern violas on our wall too. This is a very nice 16 and 1/8th instrument priced at £5000, which you can see by clicking here.
While you are reading, can we also draw your attention to our 'Buying an Instrument' guide? Many customers have found this invaluable, just click here to reach the website page.
If you would like to try any of these instruments, please ring and make an appointment on 01462 426012 or email us at sales@strings.co.uk.
Or, of course, do feel free to pop in to the shop during opening hours.
If you don't know the area and would like to make a day of it, Hitchin is a pleasant market town surrounded by villages with pretty country pubs, details of which are listed under the 'shop' section of our website.
