STRINGS' TENTH BIRTHDAY
2007 marks Evans-Pughe Strings' tenth anniversary and we shall be celebrating throughout the year. Since its launch in November 1997, the shop has grown from just selling stringed instruments and accessories to establishing a highly regarded workshop and supporting an ever expanding list of contemporary makers.
We are particularly proud of the reputation our workshop has built up over recent years. Our knowledge of instruments and experience in maintainance, repair, and restoration is perhaps best illustrated by our key role in looking after instruments for the Benslow Musical Instrument Loan Scheme, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
When the shop first opened in November 1997 we were keen to include in our stock instruments from contemporary makers. This aspect of our business has grown from strength to strength to the point where ten years on, stock listed on the website includes master instruments from at least 14 contemporary makers. Our support for such a large number of new makers is very unusual in the stringed instrument business.
"Setup affects the playability, the tone, and the physical well being of your instrument”
From day one, we have emphasised the importance of proper setup for stringed instruments i.e. the adjustment and special crafting of the bridge, soundpost, fingerboard and pegs so that the instrument performs to its full potential. (And we will continue to go on about this for the next ten years).
“Setup affects the playability, the tone and the physical well being of your instrument,” explains Strings' retail manager Keith Crowe. “It can be nearly impossible to play an instrument well if it hasn’t been properly setup, and if your instrument sounds brash and screechy you won’t feel inspired to pick it up and practice. Moreover, a poorly fitted setup can contribute to, or cause, serious problems and expensive repairs.”
All the instruments in the shop are properly set up in this way, which takes time and skill from our workshop staff but it repays with instruments which play and sound at their optimum and, with care, should remain in this condition for years to come.
